While the African slave trade was outlawed in the United States by 1808, the domestic slave trade, which included the route navigated by the Creole ship, flourished. Most Northern States abolished slavery between 1774 and 1804. During the time of the Creole slave revolt (1841), the slave trade was concentrated in major Southern cities such as New Orleans, Louisiana.
