Thesis
During the fall of 1841, aboard the ship Creole, 135 slaves were to be transported to Louisiana for sale. To escape their tragic fate, they plotted to revolt against the slave traders. The slaves triumphed, sailing themselves to freedom in the Bahamas and foreshadowing a new future for slaves in the United States. The rebellion resulted in increased diplomatic tensions between the United States and Britain, and sparked fear and hope, dividing the American Public and the United States Congress. The aftermath of the revolt reinforced preexisting rifts in the American society that would eventually lead up to the American Civil War.
